An Irish woman, her Romanian partner and the couple's two-year-old son were killed as a result of a gas leak while on holiday in Romania last month.

Ms Karen Creighton (33) and Mr Constantine Niacsu (39) were killed as they slept with their son Andrei early on November 30th.

The accident is understood to have been caused by a leaky gas cooker and the family died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Ms Creighton, from Ballybrack, Co Dublin, who had four other children, was visiting her partner's parents in the city of Tg-giu, 400 km south-west of the capital, Bucharest. The couple had lived in Tallaght, Co Dublin.

Ms Lorraine Creighton, a sister of the deceased woman, said yesterday Romanian authorities had threatened to bury the bodies in that country unless she paid €8,000 for hospital, coroner and transport costs. Only when they found the money were the bodies released, she said.

"There was so much red tape and we had to find the money, otherwise we would not have been able to bury Karen and her son on Irish soil," she added. Ms Creighton and her son were buried in Dublin last Monday.
