Atheletics: American Justin Gatlin has been denied the world record he set in the men's 100 metres after what was deemed to be an error in the reading of the result, the International Athletics Federation (IAAF)have confirmed.

Gatlin's time has been amended from 9.76 seconds to 9.77 seconds meaning the American has equalled and not beaten the previous record set in 2005 by Jamaica's Asafa Powell.

The ruling body said it had been informed by the company responsible for the timing of an error in the reading of the result recorded by Gatlin in Doha on Friday.

Based on his time recorded after winning the race, Gatlin ran 9.766 seconds, which was then announced as a world record 9.76, rather than being rounded up to 9.77 seconds.
