Pipeline inflation in Germany appeared to be easing, with the German producer price index (PPI) rising by its slowest rate in five months, data published by the Federal Statistics Office showed today.

PPI edged up by 0.2 per cent in May from the figure for April and was 4.6 per cent higher than it had been in May 2000, the office said in a statement.

The annual rate of change was slower than the 5 per cent recorded in April and was the slowest increase on a 12-month basis since January.

Nevertheless prices were still being driven primarily by energy prices, which rose by an average 18.6 per cent over 12 months, the office explained.

Excluding energy, German PPI rose by just 2.6 per cent on a 12-month basis.
