Cricket:South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs has made history by hitting six sixes in an over against Holland - the first time the feat has been achieved in international cricket.

Gibbs savaged the unfortunate Daan van Bunge as South Africa charged towards a mammoth total at Warner Park in their World Cup Group A match in St Kitts.

The previous record was held by Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya and Gibbs's compatriot Shaun Pollock, who both managed four sixes in the same over twice.

Gibbs struck his blows in the 30th over of a South Africa innings reduced after rain to 40 per side.

Leg-spinner van Bunge was first dispatched over long-on, then long-off twice, then square-leg and once more each over long-on and long-off.

The blows came on a small ground, the boundaries of which are just long enough to conform to one-day international standards.

Previous instances of six sixes being hit in one over have come from Garry Sobers in a Sunday League match in 1968, and from Ravi Shastri in a first-class fixture in India.

One of the World Cup's sponsors has announced it is to pay £513,000 ($1 million) to the charity Habitat For Humanity as a result of Gibbs's feat.
