Gillane case delayed until end of year

THE trial of Co Galway man, Mr Pat Gillane, on a charge of soliciting two men to murder his wife, Mrs Philomena Gillane, in 1994 - which was due to begin at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court at the end of June - has been adjourned until December.

At the court yesterday, counsel for Mr Gillane, Mr Patrick McEntee SC, was granted an adjournment until December 1st, as he is appearing at the Dunnes Payments to Politicians Tribunal which resumes on June 30th.

Mr Gillane (34), of Glenbrack, Gort, was due to go on trial on the same date.

He is charged with soliciting Mr Christopher Bolger and Mr Michael Doyle, on a date unknown between January 1st and January 31st, 1994, to murder Mrs Gillane.

His original trial at Galway Circuit Criminal Court was abandoned last September and the case transferred to Dublin when Mrs Gillane's mother, Mrs Nonie Gordon (76), collapsed and died shortly after the hearing began.

The trial is expected to last about five days.
