Athletics: Irish athlete David Gillick finished second in his 400 metre heat at the European Championships in Gothenburg this morning.
The heat was won in a time of 46.10 seconds by last year's European number one, Tim Benjamin of Britain, who was attacked in the last 80 metres by Gillick and Kamghe Gaba.
Gillick, the reigning European indoor champion, finished just 0.06 seconds behind, while Germany's Gaba clocked 46.55 seconds.
The two other Irish athletes in action in the same event failed to qualify.
Running in the first heat Paul McKee narrowly missed out on qualification finishing fifth with a time of 46.48 seconds. In the final and fastest qualifier David McCarthy finished sixth with a time of 46.53 second.
Also on the track Michelle Carey finished fifth in the third heat of the 400 metre hurdles in a time of 57.61. That placed her 21st overall - not high enough to progress.
James Nolan failed to advance from the first 1500m semi-final. The 29-year-old was in a prominent position for much of the race but when it came to the crunch coming down the stretch he was swallowed-up and nowhere near one of the four automatic qualifying positions.
