Go-ahead for holiday development refused

An Bord Pleanala has again refused planning permission for a seaside holiday cottage development in Co Mayo.

The second application, which was a scaled-down version of the original plan for the Corraun peninsula near Achill, had been proposed by Mr John Clarke of Corran Cottages Ltd. The revised scheme of 10 houses was granted planning permission by Mayo County Council last June.

In its ruling, issued yesterday, An Bord Pleanala gave the same reasons as it had done earlier this year for turning down the application. As with the original scheme of 18 houses, which the appeals board ruled against last February, it said the 10-house scheme would be out of character with the pattern of development in the area; would be visually obtrusive; and would interfere with a view or prospect of special amenity value, which it is necessary to preserve.

The appeals board said that by reason of its nature, layout, density and scale, the proposed development would be contrary to the proper planning and development of the area.

The site is in an area designated as of special scenic importance in the current Mayo County Development Plan.
