Grainne a model daughter for top SF man

AT first glance, the picture seems to be of a classic English rose

AT first glance, the picture seems to be of a classic English rose. Perched on a window seat, she wears a long, summer dress and a wide-brimmed hat over her long, blonde hair.

In fact, the model in this soft-focus portrait is Ms Grainne McGuinness, the 21-year-old daughter of the Sinn Fein chief negotiator and recently-elected MP for Mid-Ulster, Mr Martin McGuinness.

Taken by a Derry photographer, Andrea O'Hare, the picture won second prize in last year's UK Fujifilm Portrait Photographer competition: another example of her work came first. Only this week did the identity of the model become known.

The eldest of the four McGuinness children, Grainne works in a clothes shop in Derry, where she lives in the family home. She is said to have been inundated with invitations to model since this photograph appeared.

Andrea O'Hare was reported as describing Ms McGuinness as "n superb natural" who had declined offers of further modelling work, although "there is a possibility she might pursue that career in the future".

Yesterday in Dublin, model agents responded cautiously to this idea. "It's very difficult to tell much from that picture because it's a portrait shot, not a fashion photo," said Ms Rebecca Morgan, of Morgan Brand, one of the country's biggest agencies. "That's obviously an outfit she's comfortable with. What if she had to wear clothes she didn't particularly like?"

Another agent, Mr Eddie Shanahan, remarked: "It's hard to say what she really looks like because of the soft focus.

He said if he was sent this photograph in the post, "which is the kind of thing that happens all the time", he would be interested in meeting Ms McGuinness.
