The title sort of gives it away, but it's not all about jumping into the first available vehicle and taking it for a spin. Grand Theft Auto is far more detailed than that. OK, you'll need transport for almost everything you're asked to do, but it's not absolutely necessary. However, if you are going to rise from lonely "joyrider" to a member of the largest most powerful family in the city you will need to carry out some favours for the mob.

Your life of crime begins in Liberty City, and for your convenience a clean car is provided. But this won't last the duration, and you will eventually have to obtain one illegally.

There is complete freedom of movement in the game and you can take any vehicle that takes your fancy including: fire trucks, buses, Cadillacs, vans, motor bikes, 4x4s, GTs, ambulances, saloons and police cars.

By successfully completing jobs, you are awarded points and when you have accumulated enough to finish a stage your status is recorded. This saves your game and allows you access to new jobs. Accompanied by a varied soundtrack and radio soundbites, Grand Theft Auto is a highly charged game full of non-stop action.
