The brother of a building worker who died on Friday after an accident on a building site in Dublin's docklands yesterday appealed for stricter safety regulations on building sites.
Mr Patrick Kelliher of Killorglin, Co Kerry, told RTE Radio 1's Liveline programme that building workers were "innocently complicit" in the growing number of accidents taking place on Irish building sites.
Mr Kelliher's only brother Tadgh (also called Timothy), a 56-year-old carpenter, died after falling while working on a building site with Marbug Construction Ltd, of Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, sub-contractor to John Paul Construction Ltd.
The unions should speak out, his brother said, and workers should also be provided with the facilities to speak out. In particular, younger workers should be protected.
He also criticised the fines imposed on contractors who breached safety regulations, describing them as "a triviality".
John Paul Construction Ltd is investigating the accident and has extended sympathy to the family. The Health and Safety Authority is also carrying out an investigation.
Mr Kelliher is survived by his wife, Bridget, and a son and daughter.
Members of his family are to take part in a march tomorrow, which leaves Liberty Hall at 10 a.m. and proceeds to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment's offices of Labour Affairs and Employment Rights in Adelaide Road.
All Dublin building sites are expected to come to a halt for the duration of the march, in an unofficial action in sympathy for the death of Mr Kelliher and to highlight safety concerns.
