Finn Marcus Gronholm claimed his first win of the 2002 season today after easing to a comfortable victory in the Rally of Sweden.

The former world champion finished one minute and 24.5 seconds ahead of compatriot and Peugeot team mate Harri Rovanpera to move to the head of the championship standings.

Gronholm opted for caution on the day's final stages as a severe thaw left gravel exposed on the usually snow-covered roads, but Rovenpera could not close the gap.

Ford's Spaniard Carlos Sainz ended third after a battle with Briton Richard Burns of Peugeot, while Finn Janne Tuohino, in a privately-entered Ford, and Briton Alister McRae of Mitsubishi claimed the fifth and sixth places respectively.
