A bronze statue of rock musician Rory Gallagher's prized Fender Stratocaster guitar will be unveiled on a Dublin street next week.

The commemorative piece which will be a key addition to the art trail in Dublin's Temple Bar was designed to celebrate the life of the bluesman.

Dermot McLaughlin, chief executive of Temple Bar Cultural Trust, said: "We are delighted to be involved in funding and supporting this project.

The idea behind this new piece of public art is to celebrate and honour Rory Gallagher, a fantastic world class musician who played here in Temple Bar and who has a public corner named in his honour.

The sculpture to be located at the Rory Gallagher Corner on East Essex Street, just beside Meeting House Square, was the idea of one of the musician's fans, Mark Walsh from Keynote Music.

Rory was born in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, but grew up in Cork and it was there that he set out on his musical career, with the Fontana Showband before later going solo. In later life, his high standard of guitar playing led to him being compared to the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton.

Donal Gallagher, Rory's brother and manager, said: "We are very honoured by Temple Bar Cultural Trust's gesture and for Mark Walsh's perseverance and hard work in bringing this endeavour to fruition and not least the good citizens of Dublin for supporting this appropriate project."

Donal said the timing of the unveiling was a perfect way to remember Rory as the 11th anniversary of his death takes place on June 14th, and his DVD is currently at Number One in the Irish charts.
