Salt Lake City - A gunman walked into the Mormon church's Family History Museum library and opened fire yesterday, killing three people before he was fatally wounded, police said.

Three others were wounded by gunfire and another 20 hurt from falls and heart attacks during the morning shootout in the heart of Salt Lake City, where the Mormon church has its headquarters.

One was reported killed immediately after the shootout was reported, and two others died a short time later from their wounds.

The unidentified gunman died in an ambulance where he was temporarily being held, because authorities initially feared he had been wired with explosives, police said. It was unclear who shot the gunman. There were about 30 people in the library room where the shooting broke out.
