For the past year a major research project has been conducted in Ireland investigating the genetic aspects of manic depression and is set to continue for at least another year. The project is being funded by the Wellcome Trust, a registered charity in the UK, and is being conducted through the Department of Psychiatry, Trinity College Dublin. Manic Depression or Bipolar Affective Disorder is a disabling illness which causes prolonged episodes of disturbed mood, most commonly resulting in elation and over-activity while also making the sufferer prone to episodes of depression. The researchers are keen to speak to families where more than one brother or sister is affected and would welcome enquiries at the following contact numbers: Dublin (01) 6082465 (Dr Brian Larsen/Nurse Claire Comerford); Cork (021) 324729 (Dr Ed O'Mahony/ Nurse Robert O'Connell).
