The Irish Heart Foundation (IHF) estimates that only 20 per cent of women know that cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women in Ireland. Also, menopause increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
September is the Irish Heart Foundation’s heart month, and this year’s campaign is focusing on women’s heart health. They are highlighting things like the differences in women’s heart attack symptoms. As with men, women’s most common symptom is chest pain, but women are more likely to experience symptoms like shortness of breath, nausea or pain in the arm, back neck or jaw.
Everyone can follow the IHF’s advice: get active for 30 minutes a day, five days a week, eat healthy, stop smoking, relax, have regular blood pressure and cholesterol checks, know your family history and know the signs of heart attack and stroke.
