Dermot O’Neill, gardener and broadcaster
Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
I’ve never smoked and I’m not a big drinker. I’d have a glass of wine out with a meal but I don’t drink pints. I like good healthy food and I take reasonable exercise. I generally have a healthy lifestyle and I think that stood to me when I was diagnosed with stomach cancer.
How often do you exercise?
I’m always doing something. This week I was down in the garden digging and I knew all about it afterwards because I felt it in my back. I like to take walks or spend time in the garden. I don’t drive a car, so it means I’m on foot a lot.
Do you get your five a day?
I love fruit and veg and eat plenty of it. If they are things I’ve grown myself, all the better. I’ve a big plastic tunnel and I’m planning what’s going in there now. I love to cook, and this year I’m picking varieties that are noted for flavour and growing them organically – potatoes, tomatoes, little gem lettuce, apples and plums. I’m hoping to do melons too.
Do you worry?
Yes, I would worry from time to time. It usually hits me at night. If I get bad news or hear something, my mind sometimes dwells on it.
What do you do to relax?
I garden and I read. Gardening was a huge help when I found out I had cancer. I’m in remission now and I put my recovery down to Prof [John] Crown and my garden. The garden took my mind off things; it distracted me. Looking at the nature in the garden was wonderful – red squirrels, butterflies and birds. I’d recommend gardening to anyone who might be feeling a little depressed, it can certainly give you a lift and distract you from your worries.
What’s your unhealthiest habit?
I probably eat too much ice cream. I love it. No particular flavour, I’m always willing to try something new!
