Tackle obesity to help keep cancer at bay
The number of people suffering cancer in Britain could double in the next 40 years unless steps are taken to stem the rising tide of obesity, an expert warned yesterday.
Prof Martin Wiseman, medical and scientific adviser at the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), said today's children faced a future blighted by the disease unless something was done to curb obesity rates.
Speaking ahead of a conference organised by the charity and the Association for the Study of Obesity (ASO) in Britain, Prof Wiseman said there could be a dramatic rise in the number of people suffering cancer.
Figures suggest that a third of women and half of men would be obese in the next 40 years, he said.
Alzheimer's from four viewpoints
Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience is hosting an evening entitled Four Perspectives on Alzheimers Disease at 7pm on Thursday in the Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin.
The four perspectives will be given by a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a basic neuroscientist and a patient with mild impairment.
