PRESERVING FERTILITY: Preservation of fertility for women affected by cancer is a major issue for those facing radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

The Human Assisted Reproduction Ireland unit at the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin has recently carried out an audit of its fertility preservation services which opened in October 2003.

A report on this audit in the Irish Medical Journal explains how 19 women were referred to the services and five had their eggs cryopreserved (frozen to be made available for future use).

The authors concluded that maintaining the potential to conceive after treatment is becoming easier and more accessible to women with cancer.

BONE BREAKS: Prof Steven Boonen from the Centre for Metabolic Bone Diseases, Leuven University, Belgium, is the co-author of a new scientific model for understanding why bones break. He is the guest speaker with actress Joanna Lumley at two talks on bone health for health professionals.
