Lecture on workings of mind and brain
The mind and the brain - how are they related? This is the theme of a lecture on Thursday by neuroscientist and research psychiatrist, Dr Jeffrey M Schwartz, from the UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles. Dr Schwartz's main research interest is brain imaging and cognitive behavioural therapy. The lecture is at 7pm in the Dean Swift Lecture Theatre, St Patrick's Hospital, James's Street, Dublin. Meanwhile, the monthly public lecture organised by the depression support group, Aware, is on Wednesday at 7.30pm in the same venue. Prof Patrick McKeon will speak about the highs and lows of bipolar disorder. Admission free.
Most people lax about food safety
Over 50 per cent of people chopped lettuce on a board that had been used for raw meat without washing it first, according to research from Safefood, the food safety promotion board. The same study found that two-thirds of people did not check to make sure beef burgers were cooked thoroughly. Dr Thomas Quigley of Safefood emphasises the need to use different cooking utensils and separate chopping boards for raw and ready-to-eat foods to prevent the spread of dangerous bacteria. Always wash your hands before and after handling any food, particularly raw meat.
