Dave Fanning, 2FM DJ , tells Patricia Weston he never does any exercise, but he doesn't think he's unfit as he can manage four flights of stairs.

Do you exercise?

To my mild, and only mild, shame I don't do any exercise at all. I've never been to a gym and to be honest I couldn't be bothered. I take the kids swimming now and again but I can't really swim so I'd just splash around in the water with them.

Do you consider yourself fit?

I actually wouldn't consider myself unfit because I can manage four flights of stairs so I've never said to myself "God I'd better get fit".

What's your attitude to exercise?

I just don't think about it and never really have. I've never been overweight, in fact I'm probably underweight, I've never checked anything like that. Obviously exercise makes sense because lots of people seem to enjoy it and benefit from it. I'm just not one of those people who's going to get up at 6 a.m. and start jogging or join a gym or even wear lycra and cycle to Clonakilty. I suppose if I really thought about it, I'd like to walk more.

Are you a healthy eater?

Food is not my number one concern. I eat healthy food because my wife's a great cook. I've been on the road lately doing You're a Star and I've been eating burgers and chips. I could go a day without eating and it wouldn't bother me. Today I only had three slices of brown bread and a cup of tea and I probably won't bother eating anything else.

Have you any unhealthy habits?

I love chocolate and I probably eat too much. If I stop off at the petrol station for petrol I'll buy lots of bars of chocolate.

Have you ever suffered from a serious illness?

I'm 50 years old and I've never been to hospital or missed a day from work or had to stay in bed because I was sick. I think I missed a day in school when I was about 5 years old. Maybe it'll all catch up on me in the future and I'll have some horrible crash or something!

Are you conscious of your appearance working in TV?

I think if you grow up all your life doing TV people don't notice you getting older. I don't bother too much about my appearance, I'll have a shower and a shave and that's about it and I'd only buy clothes about once a year.

Here are some tips to get motivated to exercise:

• Exercise with friends and make fitness a social activity. Take up a team sport or find an exercise buddy so you can encourage each other to keep moving.

• Keep a diary of the activities you do each week.

• Reward yourself for exercising by buying yourself something nice or taking a day off from exercise.

• Set yourself realistic goals, if you've never jogged before don't just set out one morning to jog around the park, start walking first.

• Buy some flattering workout gear so you look good as well as feel good when you exercise.

• Exercise with your children or pet, they're so active you'll have to work hard to keep up with them.

• If you give up or skip a week don't be deterred just start again with even more enthusiasm.
