HEALTH BRIEFING:If you're of a squeamish disposition, a new podcast about surgery is probably not your thing. But if you are a surgeon or you are interested in developments in medical technology, the Surgery Now podcast could be right up your street.
The 30-minute magazine-style video podcast features a case of the week, journal watch, an image of the week, a spotlight on surgery and surgical technology.
The aim is to keep surgeons up to date and help them continue their professional development at a time that suits them, according to Prof Oscar Traynor, director of the National Surgical Training Centre, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
“They can watch it between cases, while travelling or even working out in the gym,” he said at the launch last month.
The section on medical technology should particularly pique the interest of industry.
“Over the past five years we have seen a virtual explosion of technology and this segment will provide an opportunity to . . . showcase the most interesting emerging aspects of surgical technology,” said Prof Traynor.
The plan is for new editions of the podcast to come out frequently from later this year.
