We all know it’s important to eat a sensible, balanced diet and get plenty of physical activity, but did you know that sleep is also a vital part of a healthy lifestyle?

Getting too little or poor quality sleep can mean short-term tiredness of course, but it is also associated in the longer term with increased risk of obesity and diabetes.

Keeping track of what you eat or how much you exercise is relatively easy. But how do you know whether you are getting a good night's sleep? There are a range of options on the market (some are listed here) and they include apps for your phone or devices you wear at night to track your sleep cycles, the length of time you sleep and how many times you wake in the night.

If the results are something of an eye opener (maybe you are getting less shut-eye than you thought), then you can also use the monitoring as you tweak your bedtime habits to see what effects they have.
