Possible links between heart disease and HRT continue to be debated and assessed, leading, says Dublin GP Doctor Claire McNicholas to a generally more conservative approach than before.
"At present HRT is mainly prescribed short-term for the relief of physical symptoms of menopause such as hot flushes.
"Various studies would point to the need of being more cautious than in the past when prescribing HRT to women with risk factors for heart disease.
"The best advice is for each woman to consult her GP who will deal on a case by case basis. Everyone is different, and the decision taken would be based on health, lifestyle and above all family history."

stopping smoking;
reducing fat intake;
getting regular physical activity - even 10 minutes brisk walking each day will help;
finding out about family history, and if necessary having a blood pressure and cholesterol check - quick, painless and available at GP surgery;
if approaching menopause, inform yourself about pros and cons of HRT.
