A man who hijacked a car with a hand grenade in northern Greece was killed and the vehicle's driver injured when the grenade exploded.

Police said the hijacker, who they presumed was Albanian, stopped the car near the northern Greek city of Kastoria and demanded to be driven to the nearby city of Thessaloniki.

The driver managed to notify the police, who blocked the road, but the grenade exploded before the car reached the road block. It was not clear why it exploded.

The hijacker's identity was not yet known, police said.
