Cricket: West Indies made an uncertain start to the World Cup on home soil as they reached 77 for three after 25 overs against Pakistan.

Ramnaresh Sarwan survived being dropped on one to blast nine fours and reach 49 while Chris Gayle could only manage two and Shivnarine Chanderpaul a ponderous 19 as the hosts found the going tough at Sabina Park in Kingston.

Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and opted to put the hosts into bat and the early breakthrough he craved came in the third over.

Gayle, facing only his sixth ball, edged a short Umar Gul delivery through to wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal.

Sarwan had a stroke of luck to survive with just one run to his name when he made a mess of another Gul ball but Younis Khan in the field could only parry it.

The let-off seemed to inspire the man from Guyana and he took a liking to the Pakistan attack with a steady stream of boundaries, including two fours off one Rana Naved over.

Chanderpaul adopted a more cautious approach to Sarwan and he survived a run-out chance in the 18th over.

Sarwan called for a quick single off the bowling of Iftikhar Anjum, but it was risky in the extreme and the bowler was only just off-target with a shy at the stumps, forcing Chanderpaul to dive full length to recover his ground.

Iftikhar got his man in the 20th over as Chanderpaul, on 19, nicked one behind and Akmal flew to his left to claim the catch. Sarwan's luck continued to hold however and a misfield from Mohammad Hafeez off the bowling of Danish Kaneria took him to 48.

A brilliant stop at backward point from Imran Nazir denied a certain four, and Iftikhar finally got his man as Younis this time held on in the slips. The only ray of light for the Windies was that that dismissal brought Brian Lara to the crease.
