Throw off the old blocks

The days of the nine-inch cavity block as the principal building material in Ireland are numbered, according to a report in the current issue of Construct Ireland. Already banned in some countries, such cavity blocks allow houses to be built quickly but in the long term, they provide poor insulation and therefore higher heating costs. The forthcoming EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) will challenge the use of such materials in housing. However, Irish timber frame building manufacturer Gerry    McCaughey believes vested interests in the building industry here will slow down the implementation of the EPBD, due to be adopted in January 2006.
