A explosives seizure in a loyalist area on the outskirts of north Belfast was far more significant than first thought, the RUC said today.

Almost 190 kilos of homemade explosives was found last night , rather than the initially-estimated 50 kilos.

The stockpile was discovered when police searched a derelict flat at Ballyvesey Park in the New Mossley area of Newtownabbey.

The cache was being linked to the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

RUC officers were attacked with blast bombs during the search.

Two officers were injured after a mob of around 40 attacked them. Their injuries were not believed to be serious.
