The Scottish Football Association are to take no action after reviewing an alleged spitting incident during Rangers' Tennent's Scottish Cup tie at Dunfermline.

Rangers fans contacted the ruling body's Hampden Park headquarters claiming former Dunfermline's Shamrock Rovers striker Noel Hunt had spat at Rangers midfielder Bert Konterman.

But, after reviewing video footage, the SFA have decided there is no case to answer.

Had they decided otherwise the SFA's video review panel would have been brought in to study the incident further and make a recommendation.

That was what happened when Rangers defender Lorenzo Amoruso appeared to spit at Ayr's James Grady during another cup tie and a disciplinary panel eventually served a four-match ban on the Italian.

A number of Rangers fans were keen to see an opposition player punished for an apparently similar incident and lobbied the SFA.

But the SFA's head of the disciplinary and referees department Drew Herbertson confirmed that the matter had now been dropped.

He said: "We review these matches as a matter of course to see if there is anything amiss.

"While we acknowledge that there was a spitting incident, the TV evidence was inconclusive as to the exact nature of it and so it has not been referred to the video review panel."
