BRITAIN: The trade union Amicus is demanding urgent changes to corporate manslaughter legislation in Britain following a recent case which highlighted that companies responsible for the death of their employees are not being held accountable.
The union is pressing for prison sentences for senior directors found liable of health and safety breaches resulting in death or serious maiming.
A £200 fine was imposed recently on a company whose health and safety breaches resulted in the death of a worker in 2003. The judge said that the fine had to be set so low because of the company's debts.
Amicus argues that the imprisonment of directors should be the only fitting outcome in this or similar cases. - (PA)
