The former Taoiseach, Mr John Bruton, said in his statement to the Moriarty tribunal that he met Sir Anthony O'Reilly in August 1996 when an impromptu meeting was arranged after the two men met in Co Cork.

Mr Bruton, the then Taoiseach, said he met Sir Anthony at a social occasion in Glandore, Co Cork, where he was over-nighting with his family on his way to Skibbereen, Co Cork, to fulfil a public engagement. Sir Anthony has a holiday home in Glandore.

Mr Bruton said his solicitors had written in detail to the tribunal in relation to the meeting and he reiterated that in that letter he recalled what had occurred at the meeting.

"My recollection is that it wasn't a particularly long meeting. Dr O'Reilly raised a number of issues of concern to him and in particular the TV deflector issue and I believe he expressed certain unhappiness regarding the award of the GSM licence."

Mr Bruton told the tribunal in his statement that he did not, as he might normally do, keep a note of the meeting with Sir Anthony.

"This was a meeting of a quasi-social nature arranged spontaneously. Although I don't recall doing a brief note subsequently on the matters discussed, I believe that my special adviser Seán Donlon does recollect such a note covering the four main areas discussed as detailed in my solicitors letter to you of the 17th June 2002."
