Woman jailed for threat to kill garda
A mentally ill woman who threatened to kill a garda she had attacked before has been given a two-year sentence by Judge Desmond Hogan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Catherine Finn (31), Blackrock, Co Dublin, had received a previous two- year suspended sentence in April 2005 after she attacked Garda Fergal Long with a knife at Blackrock station.
She said she was acting under instructions from "voices in my head" and told gardaí: "The voices won't stop until I kill one of you. They won't go away because I didn't cut one of you."
Garda Rona Barker told Mary Rose Gearty, prosecuting, that this sentence was reactivated in July 2005 and Finn was put into custody after she rang Blackrock station and said she would kill Garda Long.
Judge Hogan suspended the final nine months of the two-year sentence and said that while he had a "very sympathetic view of Ms Finn's plight", she could not be left at liberty.
Woman jailed for hoax 999 calls
A woman who made a series of hoax calls to gardaí and the emergency services has been sentenced to three and a half years by Judge Frank O'Donnell at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Rachel Stafford (31) William Street North, Dublin, was found guilty by a jury in May of making 38 malicious hoax calls from January 2001 to December 2003. She had pleaded not guilty to 54 counts. She made hoax 999 calls to gardaí, to Dublin Fire Brigade and to the ambulance service.
Man jailed for stabbings
A man who was charged with murder in England in 1976 has been jailed for nine years for stabbing a man in the head and causing him brain damage. Paul Morgan, (47), Rathmines, Dublin, also stabbed a second man, causing him impairment in the use of his hand.
Morgan pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault in February 2005, intentionally causing serious harm in the Beer Garden Pub, Rathmines, to Gerald Bradley (46) and Barry Conway (27).
The court heard the attacks were unprovoked.
Suspended term for carrying drugs
A father of two who was found transporting cannabis resin valued at almost €160,000 has received a five-year suspended sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Ciarán O'Donovan (26) Gurranebraher, Co Cork, pleaded guilty to having the drug on Naas Road in February 2005.
Six years jail for importing cocaine
A Nigerian man with a business in the US has been jailed for six years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for importing cocaine valued at €126,000. Innocent Anachuna (38), Charlotte, North Carolina, pleaded guilty to having the cocaine at Dublin airport in March 2005.
Anachuna, married and the father of two children, has lived in the US since 1995.
Teenager helped to steal wallet
A teenage father of two, who took part in the theft of a woman's wallet as she walked on Dawson Street, Dublin, has been detained for four months. The boy (17), who is originally from Romania, had pleaded guilty to the theft on April 23rd.
The court was told that he already had 25 previous convictions mostly for motoring offences.
Teenager brought child out to beg
A 17-year-old girl brought her three-year-old cousin on to the streets so she could beg for money for a new pair of runners, a court heard yesterday. The teenager pleaded guilty at the Dublin Children's Court to having a child in her custody at O'Connell Bridge, Dublin, for the purpose of begging contrary to the Children Act 2001, last February.
