Iran, EU make progress in nuclear talks

VIENNA - Iran's nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani and the EU's foreign policy chief Javier Solana said yesterday they had cleared up misunderstandings and made progress in talks on Iran's disputed nuclear programme and would meet again soon. Their upbeat verdicts could slow Washington's push for swift UN Security Council action this month to impose sanctions on Iran over its atomic fuel work.

Bermuda gets hurricane warning

HAMILTON - Bermuda's government told residents to prepare urgently for powerful winds and high seas yesterday as Hurricane Florence strengthened on a track towards the British Atlantic territory.

Forecasters predicted Florence would intensify as it passed Bermuda this morning. - (Reuters)

French tourists seized in Yemen

SANAA - Armed Yemeni tribesmen kidnapped four French tourists in the east of the country yesterday to press for their relatives to be released from jail, Yemeni and French officials said.

Mistaken identity feared in shooting

LONDON - Teenager Jessie James may have been the victim of mistaken identity when he was shot dead on Saturday in Manchester in apparent gang violence, police said. Detectives said while the 15-year-old, who was gunned down by semi-automatic fire, may have been the victim of a gang-related shooting, there was no evidence to suggest the youngster himself was in any gang. - (Reuters)

Doubts if Castro can attend summit

HAVANA - Leaders of the Non-Aligned Movement of 116 developing nations will meet in Cuba this week for a summit that will gather some of the US's fiercest critics. But Cuban leader Fidel Castro may not be well enough to attend. The movement, which groups almost two-thirds of the UN's member states, is expected to endorse Iran's nuclear energy programme. - (Reuters)
