Two jailed for assaulting Lithuanian

Two men who assaulted a Lithuanian national during a confrontation which left another Lithuanian man in a vegetative state have been jailed for three years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Michael Rae (20), of Barry Road, Finglas and Leigh O'Connell (19), of Blackmore Lane and formerly of Blessington Street, Dublin pleaded guilty to violent disorder and assault causing harm to Sigitas Ziezdrys (23) at Royal Canal Bank, Phibsboro on September 25th, 2004.

Their co-accused, Kevin Dunne (19), of Ballyfermot Drive, was earlier sentenced to seven years for causing serious harm to Vytautas Sukys (48) and assaulting Mr Ziezdrys causing him harm during the same outbreak of violence. Mr Sukys is still in a coma.

Strangled victim after stick attack

A father of two who strangled a Cavan man who had beaten him with his walking stick, has been remanded in custody pending sentence by Judge Desmond Hogan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Thomas O'Reilly (33), of Mountjoy Street, Dublin pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Ben Carrolin (58) at Saint George's Place on April 21st, last. Mr Carrolin was originally from Virginia, Co Cavan, but had been living in the north inner city for a number of years.

Murder trial jury to consider verdict

The jury at the trial of a Dundalk man accused of killing a man in the town on Christmas Eve 2003 is expected to start considering a verdict sometime later today.

Kenneth Cunningham (31), Woodview Park, Castletown Road, Dundalk denies the murder of father of two, Laurence Garvey (59), at Patrick Street.

Mr Justice Philip O'Sullivan yesterday began his charge to the jury at the Central Criminal Court.

Waved gun in Garda station

A man who hoped to provoke gardaí to shoot him by entering a station waving a gun, has been sentenced to three years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Wayne Tansey thought there would be an emulation of the "Abbeylara siege" when he entered Shankill Garda station pointing a black handgun asking to be shot because he was distraught at the possibility of not seeing his children if he was jailed for an earlier drugs offence.

Tansey (21), of Cromlech Fields, Ballybrack pleaded guilty to possession of an air pistol which he used to unlawfully intimidate at Shankill Garda station on August 14th, 2004, and also to possession of cannabis resin for sale or supply on August 4th, 2004.

Rape trial nears conclusion

The concluding stages have been reached in the trial at the Central Criminal Court of a 30-year-old Lithuanian man who denies raping a Meath woman in June 2004.

The jury has heard closing addresses from prosecuting and defence counsel, and will begin its deliberations today after Mr Justice Henry Abbott concludes his charge.

Prison officer crashed into taxi

A Dublin prison officer drove through a red light while over twice the legal alcohol limit and crashed into a taxi whose driver suffered serious bodily harm but has no recollection of the accident.

Martin Beegan (35), of Selahurst Avenue, Ongar was disqualified from driving for eight years, fined €1,000 and ordered to carry out 150 hours community service by Judge Katherine Delahunt who noted his licence had only been restored for four months when he offended again.

Beegan pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to dangerous driving and drink-driving offences.
