Eight anti-war protesters granted bail

Eight anti-war protesters remanded in custody after being charged over a demonstration at the Derry offices of a US missile guidance systems manufacturer were granted bail in the Northern Ireland High Court yesterday.

Mr Justice Morgan imposed stringent conditions after the crown said damage to Raytheon offices was about £350,000.

The men appeared in Derry Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with aggravated burglary with intent to damage and a second charge of unlawful assembly.

The eight, together with a ninth man who did not seek bail, were remanded to Magilligan prison from where they appeared by video link at the High Court.

The charges followed a protest at the Raytheon Software Centre on Wednesday. The offices were occupied for eight hours before police arrived and arrested the protesters.

Naomh Lavery, for the crown, told the court the demonstrators "smashed through doors with a crowbar they had brought with them and made their way to a first floor office occupied by Raytheon".

During the eight-hour standoff, office equipment and computers were damaged or thrown from windows.

A mainframe computer suffered £150,000 of damage and the total damage was estimated at £350,000.

She said after being arrested by police, all nine people read out a statement at the start of their interviews in which, she said, they attempted to justify their actions.

Those charged included socialist and journalist Eamon McCann (63), James Kelly (45), Colm Bryce (40), Kieran Gallagher (45), Micheal Gallagher (27), Patrick McDaid (36), Gary Donnelly (36) and Sean Heaton (34).

Naas road crash victim dies

A 32-year-old man died on Thursday at Naas General Hospital, Co Kildare of injuries he sustained in a car crash .

The accident took place last Saturday when the car he was driving went out of control and crashed into the central barrier on the northbound lane of the M7 at Newhall, Naas.

The accident occurred at about 7.30am and Naas gardaí are investigating.

Body found in Dingle harbour

The body of a man, believed to be a local fisherman in his 50s, was taken from the water in Dingle harbour early yesterday.

The body was recovered shortly after 8am near the marina area but had not been in the water for long.

A postmortem is scheduled for this morning at Kerry General Hospital.

The man was not being named until his relatives were contacted.

There were no early indications of foul play. It was thought the man might have slipped and fallen on his way to a boat.

Gardaí are awaiting results of the postmortem.

Man arrested over Belfast killing

A man who was arrested on Thursday in connection with the killing of a Belfast teenager has been released on police bail.

The PSNI arrested the man on Thursday, one year on from the murder of 15-year-old Thomas Devlin.

A woman who was also arrested was released without charge.
