K Club greenkeepers accept ruling

Greenkeepers at the K Club in Straffan, Co Kildare, last night voted unanimously to accept the recommendations of the Labour Court which allow for a 50 per cent pay rise within the next 18 months, writes Áine Kerr.

Following a ballot of members last night, Amicus branch secretary Colm Quinlan said the proposal to introduce six phased pay increases dating back to April 1st this year and continuing to January 2008 had met with overwhelming support.

If K Club management now agree to increase workers' pay from €9.87 to €14.50 within 18 months, work will not be disrupted during the Ryder Cup event next month.

The wage dispute between management and greenkeepers centres on the pay rates at the K Club, with the union claiming that staff were being paid less than €10 per hour, when the standard rate is €15.

Efforts by The Irish Times to contact the K Club proved unsuccessful last night.

Gardaí seek help over violent assault

Gardaí in Co Monaghan are appealing for the public's assistance in tracking down two burglars who beat a man who disturbed them while they were in his home at Three Mile-House at around 10.30am yesterday morning.

The back door of the bungalow had been forced open and when the man disturbed the pair, they beat him around the head with golf clubs.

They then sped of in a black "old style" BMW with yellow number plates bearing probably either a Northern Ireland or English registration in the direction of Monaghan town.

The victim managed to make his way to the local shop and Post Office where an ambulance was called.

He was taken to Cavan General Hospital where he is being treated for "severe facial injuries and shock".
