File with DPP after rape in Nenagh
Gardaí in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, have forwarded a file to the DPP following the rape of a woman in a local restaurant early of Sunday morning.
The woman in her early 30s was the victim of a serious sexual assault after she went to the toilet in Supermac's restaurant at about 3am, while her friend waited downstairs.
A man in his 20s was arrested in Templemore on Monday and was questioned until he was released without charge on Tuesday.
Woman dies in crash in Offaly
A woman in her 50s has died in a single-car crash at Coolnahiley near Clara, Co Offaly. An eight-year-old girl who was a passenger was uninjured.
The gardaí and an ambulance were called to the scene and the woman's body was removed to Tullamore General Hospital.
Mobile home judgment reserved
The High Court has reserved judgment on an action aimed at securing a second specially adapted mobile home for three severely disabled young Travellers who live with seven other family members in "overcrowded and dangerous" conditions in a single specially adapted mobile home on a temporary halting site in west Dublin.
Bernard O'Donnell (20), who is confined to a wheelchair, his sister Mary (17) and brother Patrick (13), all suffer from Hurler's syndrome, a condition which leads to severe abnormalities in development.
New appointment to arts department
The Cabinet has appointed Con Haugh to become secretary general of the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism.
Mr Haugh, who will replace Philip Furlong who is retiring, has served as assistant secretary general, in charge of sports policy and finance services.
Limerick FC loses injunction bid
Limerick FC has lost a High Court bid for an injunction restraining the FAI from replacing the club in the League of Ireland.
JRM Sports, the trading name of Limerick FC, had sought a court order preventing the FAI from negotiating any contracts to replace Limerick FC or from granting a licence to a new team when the league kicks off in early March.
Man guilty of teenager's rape
A Galway man has been convicted at the Central Criminal Court of raping a teenage mother in 2004. Francis Sweeney (34), Liam Mellowes Terrace, Bohermore, was remanded in custody by Mr Justice Kevin O'Higgins for sentence later.
The jury found Sweeney guilty on three counts of rape, attempted rape and sexual assault of the teenage woman on September 6th, 2004, in her home in Galway city.
Airman challenges his dismissal
An airman in the Defence Forces has brought a High Court challenge to his proposed discharge arising from his testing positive for cannabis.
Airman David Rawson, Carrow Road, Drimnagh, Dublin, denies that he was smoking cannabis when he was subject to a compulsory random drugs test but says he was in his car with two friends who were smoking cannabis. He claims he was given no opportunity to call evidence in relation to the possibility of a false positive test from passive smoking before his discharge being recommended.
Mr Justice Iarfhlaith O'Neill yesterday gave leave to Mr Rawson to bring judicial review proceedings challenging his proposed discharge. He has brought his proceedings against the Minister for Defence arising from his being subject to a random compulsory drugs test at Casement Aerodrome.
