Passenger dies after car strikes wall
A man died early yesterday when the car in which he was a passenger struck a wall in Dublin.
Officers at Mountjoy Garda station are investigating the incident which occurred at Ballyboggan Road, Glasnevin, about 6am. He was named last night as Paul Ronan (19), Berryfield Road, Finglas, Dublin 11.
The driver of the car was taken to the Mater hospital where his injuries are described as not life-threatening.
Meanwhile, gardaí at Newbridge, Co Kildare, are investigating a fatal road traffic collision on Saturday morning at Old Bog Road, Roseberry, Newbridge. A 16-year-old youth was killed when the vehicle he was driving overturned and crashed.
Irishman killed in Hawaiian crash
A Co Mayo man was one of four people killed in a helicopter crash in Hawaii last Thursday.
John O'Donnell, Porturlin, Ballina, who had lived in the US for 25 years, was on holiday with his wife, Bernie, who was injured in the crash and is recovering in hospital.
Youth remanded in custody
A 16-year-old youth who allegedly jumped out of a Garda patrol appeared before a special sitting of Limerick District Court yesterday afternoon.
The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is facing a lengthy number of charges, mostly under the Road Traffic Act, arising out of three separate incidents.
Garda Tony Minniter told the court one of the offences relates to an alleged incident on February 24th when the defendant jumped out of a patrol car following his arrest.
The teenager, whom the court heard is married and a member of the Traveller community, is also charged with driving without insurance and giving a false name and address.
After hearing that more charges were likely to follow, Judge Tom O'Donnell reserved the question of bail and remanded the teenager in custody to St Patrick's Institute until tomorrow.
Sectarian clashes in north Belfast
Two men were being questioned at the weekend after rival factions clashed in a north Belfast flashpoint. Gangs threw petrol bombs at each other when trouble flared in the Ardoyne district just after midnight on Friday.
Police said they used their vehicles to separate the crowds, with up to 50 people thought to be involved. Community representatives on both sides of the sectarian divide helped calm the situation.
Bomb squad called to estate
The Army bomb squad was called to Limerick's Moyross housing estate following the discovery of a pipe bomb on Saturday night outside a house in the Pineview Gardens area.
It followed an earlier shooting in the same estate that afternoon. Nobody was injured.
Shot fired into Galway house
A shot was fired into a house in Ballybane, Galway city, on Saturday evening.
A number of men were seen driving from the scene in a dark car. Nobody was injured.
A Garda spokesperson called for witnesses to contact them at Mill Street Garda station 091-538000.
