Libby to be jailed as he awaits appeal

WASHINGTON:Former vice-presidential aide Lewis "Scooter" Libby must begin serving his two and a half year prison sentence while he appeals his perjury conviction, a US judge ruled yesterday.

Libby, who was vice- president Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, was found guilty in March of obstructing an investigation into who blew the cover of a CIA analyst whose husband criticised the Iraq war.

He will have to report to prison in six to eight weeks, unless his lawyers convince an appeals court to let him remain free. - (Reuters)

FBI possibly flouted law 1,000 times

WASHINGTON:The FBI possibly violated the law or its rules more than 1,000 times since 2002 in collecting data about phone calls, e-mails and financial records while investigating terrorism or espionage suspects, FBI officials said yesterday.

The potential violations found by an FBI audit were far greater than the approximately two dozen previously documented in a US justice department report in March that was based on a smaller sampling, they said. - (Reuters)

Systems crash at space station

CAPE CANAVERAL:US and Russian flight controllers worked to fully restore critical computers aboard the International Space Station yesterday after a system crash that could force the $100 billion (€75.2bn) outpost's crew back to Earth.

US space agency Nasa made plans to keep the visiting space shuttle, Atlantis, attached to the station for an extra day to help steer it if the computers, which control navigation, remain a problem. - (Reuters)

'Killing Fields' tribunal to proceed

TOKYO:Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen yesterday welcomed an agreement by Cambodian and internat- ional judges to open the long-awaited "Killing Fields" tribunal.

The judges agreed the basic rules on Wednesday for operating a special court to try Pol Pot's top surviving henchmen, allowing the tribunal to proceed in earnest. - (Reuters)
