Drug trial told accused related to ex-officer
One of the three Englishmen on trial in connection with a €440 million cocaine haul off the west Cork coast has a brother who once served as a drugs squad officer with the London Metropolitan Police, a court heard yesterday.
A brother of defendant Joe Daly (41) served as a detective sergeant with the drugs squad of the London Metropolitan Police until his retirement in 1994, Mr Daly's sister, Margaret Kearney, told Cork Circuit Criminal Court.
Joe Daly, along with co-accused Martin Wanden (45), of no fixed abode, and Perry Wharrie (48), of Pyrles Lane, Loughton, Essex, denies possessing cocaine for sale or supply at Dunlough Bay, Mizen Head on July 2nd, 2007.
Eight-year term for sex assaults
A man in his early 60s was last night sentenced to eight years' imprisonment for the sexual assault of a minor in Co Waterford some years ago.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, carried out the assaults at a stable from a time in 1991 to 1993 when the girl was aged from 12 to 14 years.
The complainant, who is now aged 29, made a statement to gardaí in Dungarvan about the assaults in 2003, the Circuit Criminal Court in Waterford heard yesterday.
The man assaulted the girl mainly while she was helping him to clean out stables and tend to horses.
A jury heard how on one occasion the man had abused her with a brush and metal comb.
Sentencing the man last night, Judge Martin Nolan said he had carried out serious and perverted assaults.
The woman was seriously affected by the assaults, Judge Nolan said.
