Mr Cahoon (36), Harvey Street, Derry, has been in custody since his arrest. He opted at an earlier hearing for trial in the Republic.

Ms Quigley (30), a mother of four, was two months pregnant when she was beaten to death at her home in Shantallow, Derry.

Rape trial reaches closing stages

The closing stages have been reached in the trial at the Central Criminal Court of a west Dublin man charged with raping a woman he had been dating.

The 37-year-old west Dublin man has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to raping the woman at her home in September 2004.

Mr Justice Roderick Murphy will send the jury of four women and eight men out on Monday to begin deliberating.

Community work for attack on garda

A man who took part in a violent attack in June 2006, on a garda who was trying to arrest his cousin, has been given community work.

His then 15-year-old friend, who was seen kicking another garda on the ground, has had his sentence adjourned at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Declan Teeling (21) and John Dunne (18), both of Coultry Road, Ballymun, were part of a group that took part in an assault on Garda David McCarthy and Garda Ian Coyne after they tried to arrest Dean Teeling. The group had been drinking.

Judge Katherine Delahunt sentenced Teeling to 240 hours of community service to be completed within 12 months or face two years in prison. She adjourned Dunne’s sentence until March.

Two men beat up shopkeeper

Two men who beat up a shopkeeper and broke his jaw as they stole crates of beer have been remanded on bail pending sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Fred McGoldrick (23), Millbrook Lawns, and Richard Burke (24), Homelawn Drive, both Tallaght, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Kamal Singh at Londis, Old Bawn Shopping Centre, Tallaght, in July 2007. Theft charges were taken into consideration.

Judge Patricia Ryan warned them that considering the injuries sustained by Mr Singh and a detailed victim impact report, she was taking the matter very seriously.

She did not think that the €2,000 offered by Burke and €1,400 offered by McGoldrick was an adequate “practical expression of remorse”.

Judge Ryan adjourned the case to next April.

Youths accused of gang attack

Two teenagers accused of taking part in a gang attack of a man, who was beaten on the ground after he had been stabbed, are to face trial in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, a judge has ruled.

The boys, aged 16 and 17, were before the Children’s Court charged with assault causing harm to the man, a foreign national, last October at Goldenbridge, in Dublin.

Judge Patricia Ryan said the case should go forward to the Circuit Court, which can impose lengthier sentences than the Children’s Court.

The teenagers were remanded on bail to appear again next month.
