Drinks licence granted for Weston airport

Judge Joseph Mathews, who said the last time he used the airport was when he took off in a Spitfire for a London hospital, granted Pan y Vino Ltd a full drinks licence for its Skyview Restaurant.

The restaurant, just beneath the airport control tower, is part of the terminal building at the airport which is only eight miles from Dublin. Weston is owned by billionaire Jim Mansfield.

McBrearty puts bar up for sale

The Donegal nightclub where Garda operations led to the establishment of the Morris tribunal, was put up for sale this week.

Frankie’s bar and nightclub in Raphoe, owned by Frank McBrearty senior was where the 12-year saga began that cost the taxpayer in excess of €50 million.

Mr McBrearty said he had decided to sell the premises as he has now retired.

Frankie’s nightclub was at the centre of 150 summonses related to the licensing laws heard before Letterkenny District Court in Letterkenny in 1998. All of these charges were dropped by the DPP in 2000. Mr McBrearty and members of his extended family received €14 million in compensation.

Offers for the property close on 1st March.

Drug dealer jailed for 10 years

A young man was jailed for 10 years for drug dealing yesterday.

Alan Lennox (23) pleaded guilty to possessing €26,782 worth of cocaine on August 24th, 2007 at Moylaragh Walk, Balbriggan, heroin worth €26,000 on May 28th, 2005 at Buttercup Park, Darndale and €621 worth of heroin and €991 worth of herbal cannabis on August 18th, 2005 at Millwood Villas, Kilbarrack. Judge Frank O’Donnell said Lennox fitted into the classic profile of every courier who appeared before him, vulnerable, but wreaking havoc on our community.

Six years for possession of gun

A convicted armed robber who was caught by a Garda surveillance operation at the “handover” of a semi-automatic pistol was given a six-year sentence by Judge Katherine Delahunt at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.

Jason Flynn (36), of Huband Road, Bluebell, pleaded guilty to possession of a Glock pistol for unlawful purpose at St Vincent’s Street on December 14th, 2007.

21,800 award for head injury

A Co Kildare woman, who was injured when the ceiling of a lift fell on top of her, has been awarded €21,800 damages in the Circuit Civil Court. Niamh Nolan, of The Grange, Yew Street Square, Old Prosperous Road, Clane, said the accident happened in a lift at her former apartment in Cois Abhainn, Clane.
