Plant used to launder fuel dismantled
A large fuel-laundering plant in Co Armagh has been dismantled, British Revenue and Customs said yesterday.
Officials said the interruption of the plant at Killeavy meant the loss of potential revenue to its operators of nearly £9 million (€13.15 million).
In the joint operation with the PSNI and the Environmental Heritage Service on Thursday, three tonnes of toxic waste and 500 litres of pure acid were seized.
A heavy goods vehicle adapted to carry a tanker body for transporting fuel, seven industrial tanks, generators, pumps and filtration equipment were also taken.
Fireman injured at Trinity College
A fireman was injured last night fighting a fire at Trinity College. Dublin Fire Brigade was called to the college after a fire started in the roof of a building at the Lincoln Place end of the college, near Westland Row, around 9pm.
The injured fireman was taken to hospital but his condition was not known. The cause of the fire was unclear.
Tourist recovering after sea ordeal
A Swiss national who was swept out to sea while rock fishing in Belmullet is recovering in Sligo General Hospital. The tourist was with two friends when a freak wave struck Annagh Head where they were fishing.
The alarm was raised and the local ambulance crew, fire brigade, Ballyglass Coast Guard unit and the Belmullet sub aqua club were quickly on the scene. The man was recovered and flown by the coast guard helicopter to Sligo General Hospital.
One onlooker described the man as extremely lucky to be alive.
