Body recovered from cliffs

Rescue services have recovered the body of a 66-year-old Kilkee woman from beneath a cliff in Co Clare.

The woman's body was found on Tuesday evening at the base of a cliff at the East End. Gardaí described the death as a tragedy.

The incident was the third such death in Clare in the past week.

Gardaí at Ennistymon said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths of two men whose bodies were discovered at the bottom of two cliffs within 24 hours of each other and only five kilometres apart.

The first person, a man in his forties from Dublin, was discovered at the base of the Cliffs of Moher early on Thursday.

In a second unrelated incident in the early hours of Friday morning, the body of a 22-year-old man from Limerick was airlifted from the base of a cliff near Liscannor.

Lift Galvin suspension call

The mayor of Tralee and a leading member of Kerry County Council yesterday called on the GAA to fit the penalty to the crime over the controversial suspension of Kerry football captain Paul Galvin.

Ted Fitzgerald raised the issue at yesterday's annual general meeting of Kerry County Council and said the severity of the six months suspension was "damaging football" in the county.

Galvin had given his life to football, the councillor stated. "His heart is in the right place," Mr Fitzgerald said. His remarks were supported unanimously.

Further charges may follow death

Further charges may be brought against a 24-year-old man over the death of a Co Carlow man found in an apartment in Limerick city last week.

David Byrnes, with an address at Copperhill, Ballintemple, Cork, is charged with assault causing harm to Brendan McEvoy at Cherrydale Court on June 19th last. Judge Tom O'Donnell adjourned the case until July 16th.

Plan for telecom mast rejected

Planning permission for a 30-metre high telecommunications mast in an area of natural beauty in Co Mayo has been refused by An Bord Pleanála.

Galway-based Elevation Limited appealed to the board following Mayo County Council's decision to refuse permission for the structure at Carrowmoney, Partry, south Mayo. The site, at Carrawina is one kilometre from Lough Carra and Lough Mask.

A total of 24 letters, and a petition with over 350 signatures, were received objecting to the original application to Mayo County Council.

The objections related to the adverse visual impact on landscape, potential health hazards, inaccurate details, proximity to archaeological sites, intrusive impact on nearby residential properties, contravention of county development plan policies and devaluation of properties.

Elevation Limited sought to justify the mast on the basis of an alleged lack of mobile and broadband provision in the area.
