Man admits having child pornography
A Louth man has pleaded guilty to twice possessing child pornography, writes ELAINE KEOGH.
At Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court yesterday, Peter McEvoy (61), Boyle O’Reilly Terrace, Drogheda, entered pleas of guilty to both offences.
The first offence took place at the Laptop Shop, Laurence Town Centre, on June 27th, 2009, and the second offence occurred at his home two days later.
The case was adjourned for the preparation of reports. McEvoy, who is on bail, will be sentenced later this year.
Woman accused of taking ambulance
A woman was yesterday charged with stealing an ambulance during an emergency call-out in Dublin earlier this month.
Paramedics had left the ambulance in Hardwicke Street in the city to attend to a patient at about 3am on January 8th last when it was stolen. It was recovered a short time later and gardaí made two arrests.
Jessica Kavanagh (27), of Hill Street, Dublin, was charged with unlawfully taking the vehicle, at Rory O’Connor House, on January 8th. Garda Joseph O’Connor told Judge Bryan Smyth at Dublin District Court that the defendant was arrested “under section 112 of the Road Traffic Act” at 3.10am at Rory O’Connor House, on the date of the alleged offence.
She was brought to Store Street Garda station and “made no reply” when cautioned. Judge Smyth remanded Ms Kavanagh on bail to appear again on March 24th for the DPP’s directions in relation to whether the case should stay in the District Court or be sent to the Circuit Court, which has wider sentencing powers. He granted free legal aid. A 16-year-old girl who had also been arrested was later released without charge.
Suspended term for fatal car crash
A man has been given a suspended three-month sentence and disqualified from driving for four years for being involved in a crash which claimed the life of a Galway woman.
Ciarán Ó Laoí (22), Baile an tSagairt, Spiddal, had denied driving dangerously at Minna, Inverin, on July 19th, 2008, causing the death of Mary Dillane (47), Inverin. Ó Laoí was exceeding the speed limit when his car hit Ms Dillane’s car side-on as she was exiting from a side road.
He already stood convicted by another jury last February of careless driving at Ballinahoun South, just over two miles away from where the fatal collision occurred moments later at Minna.
Ó Laoí had been convicted just six days before the fatal crash of driving without insurance and had another conviction for driving without insurance a year after the accident.
Brothers forfeit €36,520 to State
Two brothers of a man jailed for his role in a 2005 kidnap robbery have had €36,520 forfeited to the State following an application by gardaí.
Christopher and Luke Farrelly denied any role in the crime for which their brother Mark Farrelly was jailed for 25 years in 2009.
Both Christopher Farrelly, with an address at Swans Nest Road, Kilbarrack and Kinsealy, and Luke Farrelly, of Glin Road, Coolock, have no previous convictions.
Their brother Mark Farrelly, of Moatview Court, Priorswood, was jailed in 2009 for his role in the kidnapping of a cash van driver’s family while the man delivered €2.28 million to a gang in March 2005.
