Police officers charged with killing Muslims
SARAJEVO – The Bosnian state prosecutor indicted four Bosnian Serb police officers yesterday on charges of mass killing, detention and torture of Muslims in eastern Bosnia early in the country’s 1992-1995 war.
Milan Peric (49), Spasoje Doder (49), Predrag Terzic (41), and Aleksandar Cerovina (39), are suspected of war crimes near the eastern town of Kalinovik, the prosecutors office said. The four are serving police officers and only Mr Peric is in detention. “They are charged with having taken part in illegal detention, killing, intimidation of Muslim civilians and large-scale destruction of their property.
Greeks resisting ban on smoking
ATHENS – Most Greeks violate a new ban on smoking in indoor public places, the health ministry said, in another sign of the difficulty in making Europe’s heaviest smokers kick the habit.
The new socialist government hoped fines would work after a partial ban in 2009 was largely ignored, but smokers still routinely smoke in bars, restaurants and taxis.
“Everywhere, I mean in eight out of 10 cases, the ban is being violated – and this is really bad for the state,” health minister Andreas Loverdos told deputies on Wednesday, after inspectors went to check on bars and restaurants.
