Mountain rescue team try to find body of hiker

A mountain rescue team was on its way to recover the body of a man who fell yesterday from a mountain at Leenane on the Galway/Mayo border.

The man was among a group which went hiking on the more than 600m-high summit known locally as Devil’s Mother. The alarm was raised around teatime.

Inquiry under way after blaze death

A 63-year-old man who died in a house fire in Limerick at the weekend will be laid to rest tomorrow.

Gardaí say they are treating the incident as an accident and investigations are under way to confirm what started the blaze.

Tony Purcell died at his home on South Claughaun Avenue, Garryowen, Limerick, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Mr Purcell lived alone and was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital shortly after 4am when the alarm was raised, but died a short time later.

His removal will take place this evening from Crosses funeral home at 7.30pm to St John’s Cathedral. Funeral Mass will take place tomorrow at 11am.

Man’s body found in River Bann

The body of a man missing since last weekend was recovered from the River Bann in Coleraine.

Police had been searching after being alerted last Sunday that a man had plunged into the water at Bannside Wharf. The dead man was aged 40 and came from the Co Derry town. – (PA)

Children tested after TB outbreak

A number of pupils at a south Dublin primary school have been tested for TB after their teacher was diagnosed with the contagious disease.

The HSE has confirmed that its public health doctors were working closely with

St Pius Boys’ National School, Terenure, after the teacher became infected.

While a parent claimed a number of pupils had also been infected, the HSE said no new cases of TB were diagnosed after it traced those who had been in close contact with the teacher.

Ó Brádaigh to stand down

Republican Sinn Féin leader Ruairí Ó Brádaigh has announced he is standing down for “reasons of age and health”.

In a brief statement last night , Mr Ó Brádaigh said he would not stand for the position at the party’s forthcoming ardfheis. “I will, however, be going forward

for membership of an ard chomhairle and for the office of patron of the organisation,” he added.

Man charged after drugs seizure

A man has been charged and will appear before Blanchardstown District Court this morning in connection with a €120,000 drugs seizure at the weekend.

Four men were arrested after gardaí seized more than 10kg of cannabis herb during a series of raids in Meath, Dublin and Westmeath on Saturday. Two men were released without charge yesterday while a third man remains in custody.

Gardaí recovered 3kg of cannabis when they stopped and searched a car at Main Street, Dunboyne, Co Meath, at about 2pm. A follow-up search of a premises in the town uncovered an additional 2kg of cannabis.

A further 5kg of the drug was found in Huntstown, Dublin 15, and 1kg was seized from a house in Athlone.

Huge turnout for mini marathon

Thousands of women took to the streets of Cork yesterday to participate in the 28th annual women’s mini marathon. Upwards of 10,000 ran or walked the 4.5-mile race on behalf of various charities.
