Horse trainer being sued by injured jockey

A horse trainer and dealer is being sued at the High Court over severe brain injuries suffered by a jockey after he came off an injured horse.

Anthony Meagher (43), Theresa Ahearne Close, Grange, Clonmel, Co Tipperary, has, through his wife Martina, brought the action against Thomas Keating, Nicholastown, Grange, Clonmel, over the incident in December 2003.

Mr Keating has denied the claims and has also pleaded contributory negligence by Mr Meagher. He claims he failed to exercise reasonable care, skill and diligence at the time of the accident and failed to adequately control the horse.

Sex offender being extradited

A convicted sex offender wanted by the British authorities for failing to notify them of his address and intention to come to Ireland has agreed to his extradition back to Britain.

Gerard Francis Colbert (59), a British national with an address at Lady Lane, Waterford, yesterday consented before the High Court to return to Britain.

Mr Justice Peter Charleton was told Colbert was wanted on charges including that, in 2007, as a registered sex offender he failed to notify the British authorities of his home address or that he had changed addresses.

He is also charged with failing to inform the British authorities that he was leaving the country.

€395,000 for boy's birth injury

A young boy is to receive €395,000 in settlement of his High Court action over a shoulder injury allegedly suffered as a result of negligence in the circumstances of his birth at Tralee General Hospital. The settlement is without admission of liability.

The action was brought by David O'Connor (10), suing through his mother Elizabeth, Ballyrickard Court, Tralee, against consultant obstetrician John Doyle, with a practice at Tralee General Hospital, and the HSE. The defendants denied the claims.

John O'Mahony SC, for David, said the case arose from difficulties during the boy's birth on May 13th, 1998.

Man faces Cork rape sentence

A man who raped a woman in Cork earlier this year will be sentenced later at the Central Criminal Court.

David Hegarty (32), Hollyville Mews, Grange, pleaded guilty to orally raping the woman on March 22nd.

Charges relate to Cavan death

A Meath man appeared before a special sitting of Cavan District Court on Monday night on a number of motoring offences in connection with the death of Tyrone man Jonathan Heagney near Kingscourt, Co Cavan, last Saturday morning.

Kelvan Blaney (21), Kilmainham Wood, was arrested in the area on Saturday.
