Signal failure hits Sligo and commuter line
Hundreds of rail travellers were affected by a major signalling failure on the Dublin-Sligo line yesterday, forcing long delays and cancellations to a large number of commuter services, especially those going through Maynooth.
Iarnród Éireann said the problem first arose at Porterstown in west Dublin just before noon, when a computerised malfunction hit the signalling system and many trains had to halt in Clonsilla and Coolmine.
An Iarnród Éireann spokeswoman said the company was confident the breakdown would be rectified before peak services today.
Boy remanded on murder charge
A 17-year-old boy charged with the murder of a Polish man in Drimnagh, Dublin, in February, has been further remanded in custody by the Children's Court pending the preparation of the book of evidence. The boy was charged last month with the murder of Pawel Kalite on Benbulben Road, Drimnagh, on Saturday, February 23th.
The boy remained silent during the proceedings at which his parents were present.
Man dies in Bray house fire
A 37-year-old man has died in a house fire at Pearse Square in Bray. It is thought the fire started on a sitting room couch. The man's remains were discovered in the terraced house at 9.35am yesterday by firefighters who responded to an initial report.
Murphy challenge to Special Court
Prominent republican Thomas "Slab" Murphy is seeking to prevent his trial on alleged revenue offences going ahead at the non-jury Special Criminal Court.
The three-judge court heard yesterday that Mr Murphy (58), Ballybinaby, Hackballscross, Co Louth, is seeking a judicial review of the decision to put him on trial there on the charges.
Mr Justice Paul Butler remanded Mr Murphy on bail until the end of July.
Three charged for match fracas
Four Northern Ireland men appeared at Kilmainham District Court yesterday following Tuesday night's disturbances at the St Patrick's Athletic and Linfield Setanta Sports Cup match at Richmond Park, Inchicore, Dublin.
Three men were charged with public order offences, while another man had his charges dismissed under the probation act.
Robert Ervin (48), Glencairn Pass, Belfast; William Rankin (30), Alexander Park, Carrickfergus, Co Antrim; and Stephen Smith (35), Carnhill Walk, Carrickfergus, were charged under sections of the Public Order Act. They were remanded on bail to appear again on May 14th.
Man who fled jailed for 6 years
A Scottish man who fled Ireland over eight years ago after being charged with storing firearms and €375,000 of cannabis resin for Irish criminals to whom he owed money has been given a six-year sentence.
James Tonner (41) was quickly found in Scotland by the criminals who forced him to store more drugs for which he served a four-year sentence there and was extradited back to Ireland.
Tonner, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to having the drugs and various firearms without a certificate.
'Love Ulster' rioter is jailed
A rioter in the "Love Ulster" parade who destroyed a car and threw a barrier at gardaí has been sentenced to nine months in prison at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Vincent McDermott (25), Blanchardstown, Dublin, pleaded guilty to two counts of violent disorder on February 25th, 2006.
