Bomb at Turkish ruling party building

ISTANBUL - A bomb exploded outside a local headquarters building of Turkey's ruling AK Party in Istanbul yesterday, wounding six people, including four police officers, a local official said.

Istanbul governor Muammer Guler said two officers were in critical condition after the blast went off in Sutluce district, on the European side of the city. Two AK Party staff workers were among the wounded, Mr Guler said. - ( Reuters)

Mother loses 'Ugly' libel case

LONDON - A mother yesterday lost her libel case against her barrister daughter over a book that accused her of sustained childhood cruelty.

Carmen Briscoe-Mitchell (74) said that the allegations in Uglyby Constance Briscoe were a "piece of fiction" and that they had enjoyed a loving relationship within a happy family.

She sued part-time judge Ms Briscoe (51) and publishers Hodder Stoughton Ltd, which brought out her memoir in January 2006. - ( PA)

40 held over abuse images

MADRID - Spanish police say they have arrested 40 people in raids across the country to break up a file-sharing child pornography network.

The Civil Guard said in a statement that officers had conducted searches in 51 towns, confiscating computers containing 1,350 gigabytes of child pornography, as well as 25,000 photographs and 9,000 videos. - ( Reuters)

Montenegro eyes EU entry deal

SARAJEVO - Montenegro hopes to clinch a compromise deal with the European Union's current presidency, France, and apply for EU candidate status by the end of the year, prime minister Milo Djukanovic said yesterday.

Montenegro had considered postponing its EU candidate application until next year, when the Czech Republic takes over the EU rotating presidency from France. The Czech Republic has pledged to speed up the integration of western Balkan countries into the 25-member bloc. - ( Reuters)

17 die in drunken shoot-out

GUATEMALA CITY - A shoot-out between inebriated rival drug traffickers who disagreed over the winner of a horse race in Guatemala left at least 17 dead.

The shooting took place on Sunday in the northwestern Guatemalan town of Santa Ana Huista, approximately 19km (12 miles) from the Mexican border. - ( Reuters)
