Former NI civil rights leader Ivan Barr dies#
The death has occurred of Strabane Sinn Féin councillor and former chairman of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association Ivan Barr. He was 70, writes Gerry Moriarty.
Tributes were paid to Mr Barr, who was also a former chairman of Strabane District Council. The Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone, Pat Doherty, said Mr Barr, who died on Friday night, was a man of deep integrity whose loss would be felt across the political spectrum.
Strabane SDLP councillor Eugene McMenamin said, "Although our parties had different views I can honestly say it was an honour to have worked and have known a genuine man."
500 march to legalise cannabis
Campaigners for the legalisation of cannabis held a protest in Dublin at the weekend. Gardaí said about 500 people marched from the Garden of Remembrance on Saturday for an end to the criminalisation of people who, for "lifestyle and health choices", smoke cannabis.
Dubliner in court on IRA charges
Noel Mooney (29), Leo Fitzgerald House, Dublin 2, was charged with possession of explosives at Seán Moore Park, Ringsend, Dublin 4, and membership of the IRA at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court on Saturday.
